MANILA, Philippines - An independent film by Filipino director Brillante Mendoza won the grand prize at the 27th Miami International Film Festival in Florida, United States.

Mendoza's entry film, "Lola," is about grandmothers from Malabon's slums grieving over the loss of their grandsons.

The film was also featured as the opening film at the 12th Deauville Asia Film Festival in France.

“Lola” is also vying for the best film plum at the 24th Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland. The awards night will be held on March 21. It is also competing at the Asian Film Award in Hong Kong.

A grateful Mendoza said he is ecstatic that Filipino independent filmmakers are finally getting recognition abroad. He also noted that this proves only that a filmmaker can make a good and quality movie despite his meager budget.

The 49-year-old filmmaker has already won a string of international awards. Reports said 6 out of his 8 films have won in various film festivals abroad.

Aside from “Lola,” he also directed “Kinatay,” “Masahista,” “Tirador,” and “Serbis.”
