Gardo VersozaEver wondered what happened to hunky actor Gardo Versoza? After making his name in such titillating fare such as "Sabik sa Halik", "Machete II" and "Kirot", the former sexy icon acquitted himself as a dramatic force after playing the role of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio in Marilo Diaz Abaya's 1998 opus "Rizal."

Since then, he has starred in various movies and teleseryes such as "Mula sa Puso", "It Might Be You" and "Sugo."

In a recent interview, Versoza, who is turning 40 this year, admitted that he envies the current generation of young stars who did not have to go the sexy route in order to get noticed in showbiz.

“Buti nga sila, parang all their opportunities are given in silver platter,” he said.

“Hindi na nila kailangang dumaan pa sa pagbo-bold unlike what I did when I was trying to make a name for myself. Masuwerte sila, mapa-babae man o mapa-lalaki,” comments the still hunk actor who will star with young actress Erich Gonzales in a daily afternoon soap to be aired soon in Channel 2 titled “Katorse,” a revival of a Dina Bonnevie solo starrer for Regal Films in the early 80s.

“Hindi naman sa naiinggit ako sa mga kabataan ngayon pero sana ay i-treasure nila ang chances na ibinibigay sa kanila ng mga producer,” he added.

Versoza said he is also amazed at the big break given to Bettina Anderson, the star of the award-winning movie “Prinsipe ng Sabong."

“Masuwerte si Bettina dahil ang laki agad ng kanyang papel sa pelikula. At alagang-alaga siya sa publicity ng producer,” he said.

“Prinsipe ng Sabong,” roughly translated “Prince of Cockfighting,” won several awards including gold prizes for film and direction at the World Cinema Houston Film Festival in Houston, Texas.

Both Versoza and Anderson were praised for their performances as an adopted son and a halfway house daughter of a widower.

“I feel proud I am included in a prize winning film abroad. Our director Yeng Grande is still young and the break he just had was something to cherish. Malayo pa ang kanyang mararating,” he said.

In the movie, Versoza plays a has-been actor and a cockfighter who goes home to his foster family just to sow intrigues among his foster siblings including his elder brother (Allan Paule) whom he betrays by snatching his girlfriend (Katya Santos) away.

“Hindi ako sabungero sa totoong buhay pero I could feel the character dahil ang Daddy ko na namatay na, mahilig sa sabong,” he said.
