In an interview with The Buzz host Cristy Fermin, a visibly upbeat Montano said that while his marriage and family life are not 100 percent what it was before, the situation is much improved. He also said that the problems he and his wife are going through are normal in all marriages. "Ang nangyayari ngayon ay pangkaraniwan nangyayari sa mag-asawa. Proseso pa rin eh. Pakiramdaman," he said. Early this year, Montano and Cruz were reported to have split up, and that Cruz even moved out of their home in Quezon City. Even as speculation arose regarding a possible "third party" (one suspect was the Fil-Brazilian model-actress Mariana del Rio) Cruz herself denied that their rift was because of another woman. More recently, a rift between Cruz and members of Montano's immediate family also came to light. The bad blood between Montano's sister Mercedes and Cruz escalated to the point where the latter even filed libel charges against the former. Mercedes however took the lawsuit in stride, telling the media that, as an Italian citizen, she was not subject to Philippine laws. Montano waxed metaphorical when asked about his wife and sister, saying that in-laws usually have their differences, and that the "wound" opened up between the two would eventually heal. Viewers and colleagues thought it very significant that Cruz attended Montano's birthday bash in "The Singing Bee" the show he hosts over ABS-CBN. According to The Buzz, "The Singing Bee" (the Philippine franchise of the US original) is now the number one show in primetime television. The Buzz report also aired a text message from Cruz, where she admitted that she was supposed to be the surprise singer for her husband's birthday bash, but two weeks of previous illness impaired her voice. She told The Buzz that she made it a point to at least be present and greet Montano on the show, since her husband's birthday comes only once a year. Montano told The Buzz that, along with the success of The Singing Bee, he was optimistic that love would prevail. "Mangingibabaw pa rin ang pagmamahalan," he said, adding that "I'm glad the storm is over. We're together." Asked what gift was it that he received from his wife, the actor replied that the best gifts his wife gave him was her "patience and understanding."
