The Kingdom of Belgium through its Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Gregoire Vardakis and the City of Manila through Mayor Alfredo S. Lim recently tendered a dinner reception in honor of the Filipino awardees of the 35th Brussels International Film Festival at Manila City Hall.Actor Yul Servo and director Tara Illenberger were treated to a special recognition for their outstanding participation in the 2008 Brussels Filmfest in Belgium last November. Servo won the Best Actor award for his challenging role in Viva Films’ “Torotot” while Illenberger as director bagged the Best Asian Movie Award for “Brutus,” also one of the official entries to the 2008 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. The Brussels trophies were personally handed to Servo and Illenberger by Vardakis and Brussels Film Festival General Director Robert Malengreau because during the award ceremonies in Brussels, they were just named winners although they were present during the event. According to Servo, the awards night in Brussels was very meaningful because many of the guests were truly film buffs and supporters of cinema around the world. “The atmosphere was very dignified. It was white all over the hall. It was a different awarding celebration from the way Filipinos handle award rites,” Yul observed. Vardakis admitted to appreciating and liking Filipino movies. He said films are also keys to global friendship and understanding and he hoped they would foster greater ties between Belgium and the Philippines. Lim, on the other hand, thanked the Ambassador for believing in Filipino talent and zeroed in on Servo as a pride of the city council. Yul is a councilor of the First District of Manila. In his response, Servo gave thanks to all his colleagues from the local film industry and the city council which supported him all the way in his dual roles as artist and public servant. Illenberger, meanwhile, asked the audience to continue patronizing independent and commercial films.
