ABS-CBN senior sports correspondent Dyan Castillejo has rebuffed claims that her controversial interview with Manny Pacquiao during the People’s Champ’s victory party lasted for three hours.Castillejo pointed out that, in the first place, any journalist would know that “there is no such thing as three-hour interview.” “Even a live talk show, it’s only one hour… I was very surprised that it even became an issue. We were all very happy there [at the party],” Castillejo said. “For a reporter, the shorter the interview the better,” said Castillejo, who's been in the media industry for 16 years. Castillejo’s controversial interview took place in a victory party held for Pacquiao after his match with Oscar dela Hoya last December. The party was hosted by former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson. Castillejo was then doing a documentary on Pacquiao for ABS-CBN’s “The Correspondents.” Reports said guests and other media men began to complain allegedly because Castillejo’s interview lasted for three hours. This prompted ABS-CBN, through Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN Corporate Communications head, to issue a statement saying that the length of the whole interview was only 35 minutes. After the issue came out, Castillejo said she even double checked it with her cameraman and “it was just 35 minutes.” “One tape is really one hour… There’s a counter on the tape. We didn’t change tape,” she said. “Let’s say hypothetically the interview lasted for one hour, just hypothetically, there’s really no rule [on the length of the interview]. But I would never do that… we don’t need that much material for a 42-minute show. It was really Manny who was making kuwento,” she added. She said both Pacquiao and Singson were informed about the interview. It was also Pacquiao who decided that he could be interviewed at the victory party, she said. Just like in the past, Castillejo said, she waited until Pacquiao became available for the interview. She said she arrived at the party around 8 p.m. and got to interview Pacquiao only at around 11 p.m. She said after the interview she left the party. She maintained that she neither offended anybody nor broken any rule. Pacman can’t be forced The senior sports correspondent, who has been covering Pacquiao’s fights over the years, also stressed that nobody can force the boxer to give an interview. “When Manny wanted to stop he would stop. Actually, I even stopped the interview already. I was the one who cut the interview in the end,” she said. She also disclosed that Pacquiao was happy with the story on “The Correspondents”, which tackled his struggles, failures and victories in life. The said segment was aired in the first week of January. As for the “exclusivity” issue, Castillejo said this only applies to television entertainment shows. Pacquiao has a show with GMA 7. “I don’t think that’s the case for news. The whole world is interviewing Pacquiao… otherwise everybody would have been violating for the last 10 years,” she said, adding: “The point is humingi ako ng interview, pumayag si Manny. I asked the host of the house. Nobody can force Manny to do anything. He did it with gladness and joy in his heart as you can see in the interview.” Castillejo said she is not affected by the issue, adding that she is just doing her job.
