Will XLR8 break the Pinoy boy group curse? |

For some strange reason, the boy group was one worldwide phenomenon that Filipino artists and producers were not able to adapt to local tastes. We are usually so good in these things. We hear a new sound from the US and you can bet that within a few weeks there would be a Pinoy version. The same goes for every sort of music type. Think rock, folk, R&B, hip-hop etc., and we have all twisted and tweaked them to our liking and made them our own. Not so the boy band.
I am sure that many of you still recall that time during the late ’80s when boy groups are all the rage in the hit charts. The Backstreet Boys kicked things off to a great start. Then came ‘N Sync, Boyzone, 98 Degrees, Westlife. Even the Puerto Rican boys of Menudo totally captivated the Filipinos. To this day, fans still show up to watch them do Everybody and Quit Playing Games With My Heart whenever the BSB are in town and although he has had tremendous success as a solo artist, we still peg Ricky Martin as an ex-Menudo because that is how we know him best.
It was not for lack of attempts on our part. Some, like the Wiseguys had some degree of success. I guess that while they only danced and did not really sing, the closest we came to having young male idols in a group was with the Universal Motion Dancers or the UMD. They were big on TV and even appeared in the movies. Still we never came up with a song and dance boy group that could have challenged the foreigners and could have established a strong foundation for future incarnations of this type of act.

MANILA, Philippines – “Wowowee” host Willie Revillame on Monday blasted ABS-CBN News for purportedly not reporting the complete story when covering the campaign sorties of Nacionalista Party (NP) standard bearer Sen. Manuel Villar Jr.
“Mag-Kapamilya tayo. Bakit kapag lumalabas kami, 100,000, 200,000 [tao] hindi ninyo pinapakita? Konti lang. Pero kapag ibang partido… Ang ipinapakita ninyo lamang, nakatayo kami sa stage. Ipakita ninyo naman ang katotohanan na punong puno ng tao,” Revillame told an ABS-CBN correspondent during a press conference in General Santos City.
He cited as an example an NP rally in Camarines Sur, where ABS-CBN allegedly didn't show a shot of the big audience.
During NP’s campaign sortie in Koronadal, South Cotabato, Revillame asked the cameramen from different television networks to go up on stage so that they could get a better shot of the huge crowd that gathered for the event.
Among the celebrities on stage were Jessa Zaragoza, Randy Santiago, and Aegis.
Revillame, however, clarified that he was not dictating on the media.
He appealed: “Kung magco-cover tayo, i-cover nating lahat. Ipakita natin lahat. Hindi ‘yong kami lang. Nakakasawa na ang mga mukha namin, ‘yong mga tumatakbo. Hindi ba dapat ‘yong mga tao [ang ipakita ninyo?] Ang mga tao naman ang bida dito.”

MANILA, Philippines – Gretchen Barretto walked out of her press conference held in Eastwood City on Wednesday night.
Barretto, who was then endorsing a beauty product, turned emotional after a number of entertainment reporters asked her to comment on speculations that she is being pitted against youngest sister Claudine Barretto, a former talent of the Kapamilya network.
The reporters pointed out that Gretchen’s much-awaited “Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK)” episode will be aired the same timeslot as that of the launching of Claudine’s own drama anthology series in a rival network.
Gretchen’s MMK episode will be broadcast on April 10.
Gretchen said: “Hindi ko naman talaga alam ‘yong katapat. Kung sino ang katapat. Nalaman ko lang today (Wednesday). For me kasi, hindi negative ‘yong magkatapat kami. It’s positive kasi magkapatid kami.”
