Rico Blanco: Hello, world!

MANILA, Philippines - Rico Blanco’s musical journey has taken him new heights of recognition and fame in his home country and he is now ready to move into the wider musical scene overseas — with Singapore as his first stop into the burgeoning Southeast Asian market. Rico’s cross-cultural or international appeal was evident when he was asked to present two of his songs for the Singapore Radio Awards 2010 held last March 17, at MediaCorp TV Theater with Singapore’s Acting Minister for Information, Communications and The Arts Lui Tuck Yew as guest of honor.

Rico, who was prepared to perform his popular English compositions, was surprised when asked by Simon Nasser, Warner Music Singapore marketing director, to include in his repertoire Yugto, the signature song of his highly popular and critically acclaimed record album, Your Universe.

“It’s a good song with a good melody that has a universal appeal,” explains Nasser. “Moreover, it’s the most-requested song by MediaCorp, the producers of the Awards program.”

Mediacorp is the leading media company which sponsored the Singapore Radio Awards 2010 in partnership with Warner Music Singapore. The awards night became a sort of launch pad for Rico’s breakout into the regional music market considering that Singapore plays a strategic and central position not only by its geography but more because many global and regional media organizations operating in Southeast Asia have their regional headquarters there.

Flerrie de Leon, business development director of Warner Music Philippines, explains how Warner breaks new artists into the regional/international music scene. According to her, as early as January, Rico’s Your Universe album was already released in the Singapore market. Since that time, the album’s carrier hits Yugto and Your Universe have been constantly hogging the radio airwaves. Shepherding the record album from its first radio play to countrywide success is Nasser’s handiwork.

MANILA, Philippines – Flouncing onstage in white lingerie printed with a map of the Philippines on the front, Korona “Kuring” Sanchez is an eager newlywed waiting for her politician husband Mar-ramdamin to take a patriotic tour of her body.

But there’s one snag. Mar-ramdamin is constantly on the phone with Nyoy-nyoy Anino talking campaign strategy for the May 2010 elections.

Korona shrugs off the derailed wedding night, and instead breaks into song about her husband’s finer qualities.

With a wink to the audience after she campaigns shamelessly, Korona says she is simply making good on a promise she made to her husband: “We will be together, for voter or for worse.”

Korona Sanchez is one among many colorful impersonations in Jon Santos’s popular political comedy sketch “Election is Nearing… For Voter or For Worse.”

The show started in September last year and is set to end on May 13 this year.

The show, which marks Santos’s 25th year in show business, is reputedly Santos’s attempt to enlighten voters through incisive character sketches.

Concert producer pays bounced check to Lea Salonga

MANILA, Philippines - You would think that a Filipino cultural icon and an international star like Lea Salonga would be spared from the shady deals that, unfortunately, do happen from time to time in the local entertainment industry. Think again.

The Tony-award winning musical theater artist was paid a bounced check in the amount of P200,000 by the producer of “Echoes of Dreams” benefit concert at the Araneta Coliseum on Nov. 30, 2009.

As of this writing—2 months after the concert—Salonga remains unpaid and the said producer has not communicated with Salonga or her representatives.

This incident hardly made a ripple in the entertainment industry and the news only reached people in showbiz through a Facebook status that Salonga herself posted online.

That FB status, posted on December 22, 2009, reads: “Just so you know, I am not now nor have I ever been a close friend of Jerome Vinarao (Echoes of Dreams producer). All claims that he's close to me are false. As in ALL!!!”

Then Salonga reveals in the discussion that follows that she was paid a bounced check by Vinarao and also mentions that her adopted sister, Sheilla Habab, was also a “victim.”
