KC shows off emerging versatility

{mosimage}Slowly but surely, KC Concepcion is effecting her eventual domination of the local entertainment scene, at least as far as teen and young-adult faves are concerned. Are other young female performers even aware of the multimedia takeover currently happening in their midst?

We figure that some of them are clueless about the distinct likelihood that they’ll soon be relegated to back-up dancer status while KC holds centerstage with increasing stellar confidence (and, let’s hope, competence).

—Come to think of it, even if they soon become aware of it, they can’t do much about it, since the KC “star-making engine” is so well-fueled and relentless that it can’t be stopped.

Show biz genes


First off, KC’s show biz genes can’t be gainsaid: Parents Sharon and Gabby are certainly no pushovers in the “bankable stars” department, so their daughter, by rights, should be similarly superstardom-bound.

Then, there’s the long and careful preparation she’s had for the big job ahead: Years ago, she got her feet wet in performing by acting, singing and dancing in a stage musical or two. Next, she did a slew of TV-film product endorsements that made her a celebrity, without her even having to formally launch a performing career.

Then, she took all sorts of lessons, both here and abroad, that honed her performing skills, so that, when stardom finally and officially beckoned, she’d be good and ready to snatch her tiara and wear it proudly for all to be dazzled by.

Her first salvo as a performer was in the acting department, by way of a limited series of TV dramas, followed by her decision to shoot her first feature film with Richard Gutierrez.

Then, recently on Channel 2’s “ASAP,” KC launched her first album, “a.K.a. Cassandra,” with 12 cuts made up of songs of her own choice. On “ASAP,” she performed two tracks from her debut album, “Imagine” and “Imposible,” which showcased her emerging versatility.

Sultry and intense

Singing “Imagine,” she was sultry and intense, as she did her own take on the famous pro-peace and -equality anthem. Then, with “Imposible,” her performance took a rock turn and emphasized her fan-friendly “kilig factor.”

With these two diverse numbers, KC served notice that, while she was gunning for kilig popularity, she also wanted to occasionally go significant and creative. —That’s a combination that’s difficult to pull off on the local performing scene, but we give KC “props” for even attempting it.

Now, the key question: How did KC do as a singer? “Imagine” benefited from her husky, felt tones, and her sincere, yet occasionally sardonic take on the song’s lyrics was on-target.

On the minus side, however, her singing voice was thin in its high register—so, if KC really wants to become a major singing star, she should take more voice lessons to beef her voice up in terms of range, volume and power.

On “Imposible,” she did less well, because her voice lacked enough punch and texture for the rock mode. In fact, it sometimes cracked—so, we conclude that, at this early stage of her “official” singing career, she should avoid making her voice—and temperament—do things that they aren’t yet ready to successfully pull off.

Positive impression

All told, however, KC’s suite of songs on “ASAP” made a positive impression and launched her recording career with more of a bang than a whimper.

There are other young-adult female recording artists out there with better voices, but they don’t have KC’s unique combination of adequate singing talent, looks, charisma, genes and clout—so they’d better heat up their acts, pronto, if they want to survive the ongoing KC “blitzkrieg” in show business.

The next big salvo from KC is her first feature starrer with Richard, directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal. Other young female movie leads, be afraid. Be very afraid.
